Foldable Acrylate Lenses for Dogs
Veterinary cataract surgery - already described at the end of the 19th century - as well as implantation of intraocular lenses in animals, which was already performed in the 1950s in animal experiments, are characterized by a continuous and rapid development
especially during the last years. Technical development allowed an optimization of operating methods and in this way a safe removal of the opacified lens. Today, cataract
surgery in small animals has become routine surgery.
While in the 1990s predominantly intraocular lenses made of PMMA
(polymethylmethacrylate, Perspex) and in individual cases lenses made of silicone caoutchouc (polydimethylsiloxane) were implanted, today an increasing number of lenses made of foldable acrylates is inserted.
